Sunday Inspiration :: Brass is Back (Kinda)

The late 1980's and early 1990's fed us a consistent and steady stream of thermofoil cabinets and shiny brass fixtures in the kitchen. The hunter green and burgandy didn't help the look a tremendous amount.

Fortunately, trendsetters let us move on with our lives and the bulk of designers hoped that no one would ever bring up that rough patch in design history.

Well, here we are.

Design is cyclical. It's kind of like looking at an Urban Outfitters catalog with my mother and listening to a diatribe about how she "had the same dress in the seventies" and now these girls just look "homeless."

Brass was bound to come back around... This time if you use it correctly, your kitchen won't look... well, homeless.

Oh my. This Brooklyn residence was photographed by Matthew Williams for Dwell and sets brass as the dead center of attention.

So look... Brass can be good again!

And that's the gratuitous shot of the stunning walnut tops with the slightly living edge on the overlap. Breathtaking!

  1. Great post, as always, Nick. I LOVE the walnut top with the living edge overlap! That is just gorgeous. I might be able to do small doses of brass asking as its not the high glossy polished. I didn't like back in the 80s/90s!

  2. So many things are cyclical and as you say, design is definitely one of them. However I think when things come back around they are slightly improved, as though we learned a bit from last time. Splashes of brass and not overkill is definitely the way forward as the this kitchen clearly shows.

  3. These 'old school' looks are having their comeback. Just visited with a prospect yesterday who wants an "industrial style" kitchen on wheels! Another client has a paint technique kitchen (which you can view here - http://www.nicoskitchens.co.za)

P.S. I kinda like the brass look as it unique, but the bite on the side of the counter-top makes me cringe.

  4. I love the old-fashioned touches in your house and I love the style of bite on the side of the counter.
