#LetsBlogOff - Favorite Shades of White

Let's Blog Off is the bi-monthly gathering of bloggers from different backgrounds chiming in on a similar topic. This weeks question: What is your favorite color?

"What is your favorite color?"

I've been asked this question more times than I'd like to admit. Even yesterday when talking cabinet color and counter choices, a potential client admitted that she was not interested in choosing because everything looked the same to her... she just quipped, "What is your favorite color?"

It took a long time for me to realize it, but there's really no greater compliment in our industry. When we are able to earn the trust of our clients to the point of choosing for them, we've crossed the line from order taker to true creators of spaces.

As each year passes, I have fewer favorites. We must learn to love all sorts of styles, colors and methods- I don't turn down work because it's not something I would want in my home. Instead, I prefer to accept the project as a challenge and expand my design horizons.

That doesn't mean I don't still have some deep down loves...

White is a color- actually, White is the sum of all other colors combined. Maybe that's why I get that giddy feeling in my stomach when I see the perfect white kitchen.

White kitchens are not for everyone... but they certainly are for me. This kitchen is in a Chelsea(UK) Studio and features cabinetry by Plain English. If you aren't familiar with their work, get to it. I go to them for inspiration on a regular basis.

If you're a designer and someone asks about your favorite color, resist the urge to be crass and take it as a compliment... after all, it's you they trust!

If you're a homeowner and are worried that what you want may not be in style or "with-it", don't worry. Find a good designer and let them help you combine your favorite things/colors and create a beautiful space.

Hey, you could always call me... I'm always up for a kitchen in one of my favorite shades of white!

  1. My kids would wreak havoc on that kitchen!

  2. James- Don't you have a fenced in backyard or something for those kids? ;-)

Kidding(kind of). White kitchens are historically supposed to be easy to clean... all the dirt shows up!

  3. Hehe, our back yard isn't fenced. :*(

The kids are older now so it wouldn't be quite as bad as a few years ago.

I have seen some great white kitchens over the years. The ones I didn't like were because of poor lighting.

  4. White is so hard to pull off. I love how crisp and clean it looks in photos. My problem with all white is that once you commit to it, there is no turning back - ever. You become a hostage to the palette (or lack thereof) and just the very thought of such built in inflexibility makes my skin itch.

  5. I'm in the middle of painting most of the public areas of my house Benjamin Moore's "Navajo White."

I've never seen one color morph so much in different light - cream, gray, green...

  6. James- I think you hit precisely on why so many white kitchens are negatively viewed... BAD LIGHTING!

Bob- I'm sorry to disagree with you, but to me a white base allows you to use EVERY color available. I'm a creature of change... white base and you can have accent reds for Valentine's Day, pastels for spring, greens for St. Patrick's and summer, red/white/blue for Independence Day, warm earth tones in fall and TENNESSEE orange for football season. ;-)

White is the most flexible in my opinion. Just because one does white doesn't mean it's going to look sterile... or held hostage.

Raina- Again, there's the lighting. Look forward to pictures, dear!

  7. I love a white room, kitchen or otherwise.. but it is so hard to pull off with three dogs who love to wrestle in the mud. So, I settle for gloss white trim instead of wood anytime I can get it, including a massive white fireplace. But floors need to be wood; I don't think I could ever do white floors.

  8. Rufus- One day I'll have whitewashed floors... hopefully at a place on the beach. The dogs will just have to wear booties. Ha!
