Small Living: Teenage Wisdom

I'm well on board with the small house movement and think that it has plenty of merit. Does that mean I want to instantly move in to a sub-200 square foot space? No.

However, good design and architecture can allow a smaller home to function just like a larger one.

There is a young man, Austin Hay, who has started his home development when most of us were more concerned with cars and the mall. He's 16 and building his own place.

Check it out:

Now, I think Austin is on the right track. He's obviously been seeking some advice from some folks who are familiar with construction and he's learning a ton about the building process as he goes.

I'm all about picking up some hardwood floors for $25! Austin is hoping to finish up his project under the $12k he has budgeted.

So what do you think? Could you exist in a micro-home?

  2. On many levels I love the idea and have said I could do and live like this but in reality... I could do small just not micro!

  3. What an enterprising kid!

I have to admit, I think I'd get claustrophobic in a smaller space. Although I often wish for a smaller house - would be so much simpler.

  4. Madame- It's worth the watch!

Todd- Same here, buddy. I like small, but not interested in having the WC in the kitchen.

Kacey- Seems like he's headed in the right direction, huh? Thanks for the comment!

  5. Gloria- Austin had a shower in his place, and I think the shower is next to the WC... just says door. No shower would be bad news. Ha!

  6. And I thought my 800 square foot home was tiny. Based on experience, a small house can be more difficult to keep clean, so you find yourself doing more of it.

  7. House Invaders- I agree to a certain extent... smaller house may mean there is less space to mess up, but also less to clean up!
