Answer Time: Fagor Washer/Dryer Combo

Well, there she is.

I need some feedback on this combo machine... Do you have one? Spec them? Sell them? Hit me up- if it's good, bad or ugly I want to see it in the comments.

I'm planning to go play with one myself soon and wanted to have an idea what others were thinking about it and if they had drawn an opinion about its merits.

For those of you that are as unfamiliar as I am, here are a few of the specifications:
  • Available now at: livingdirect.com, ajmadison.com and build.com
  • Model FAS-3612 X
  • Washer-Dryer Combination Unit
  • 220 Volts
  • Variable Spin speed up to 1200 RPM
  • Turbo-Time
  • Interactive LCD:
    constant information about wash cycle
    -time delay
    - program duration and time remaining
    - selected functions
    - selected revolutions
    - intensive wash
    -extra rinse
    - easy iron
  • 16 programs
  • Anti-crease reversing system
  • 180 Degree door opening

In addition to these little nuggets, the entire unit is just 24" wide and the 33.5" tall(yep, it'll fit under a standard kitchen counter) and is VENTLESS!

So share, folks... tell me why I need to be using these(or not).

  1. My parents have a similar machine (not Fagor) and it takes FOREVER for the load to dry.

  2. Thanks for the heads up, Raina- I wondered about the same thing with the machine not having a vent.

  3. I've installed a number of them in apartments where there was no possibility for venting and not enough room for a pair, stacking or otherwise. Reina has it right on the drying part, but for the couples who had them it wasn't an issue. They would load the unit with whites (for example) when they left for work and they'd be done by dinner. The after dinner another load which would be ready in the morning.

I've used them as well in Europe. It takes some getting used to but they work well and are very energy and water efficient.

  4. I can't speak to the Fagor unit, Nick...but I can speak to the Ariston. All in one's work well if used properly. It is not for every lifestyle. If you're a family of four, it's not the right appliance. But if you're single, a couple, live in a condo or apartment without ventilation OR you want extra laundry in a nanny suite or master bedroom for example, it's great.

The key to great performance in the Ariston is managing the load size. You can "jam" the laundry in the wash cycle, but the dryer portion relies on air flow from the fan, therefore there needs to be space around the garments. Ariston recommends smaller, more frequent loads instead of bulkier infrequent loads. Some may argue that that is inefficient...but the other energy saving features of the unit more than make up for it. (For example, the Ariston is 110 volt requirement that allows you to plug and play without venting)

So once again, the all in one is for a certain lifestyle - not all, and like anything, must be used properly to be effective. Ariston has earned the Woolmark Platinum Care certification for high quality.

Phew - sorry for the book...and just to be completely transparent, The Indesit Company is one of my clients. Ariston is one of their brands. And I have more info if you'd like it! :)
